Musings of An Old Man

CATCHING UP WITH WILLARD

WHEN I WAS BORN – SO I’VE BEEN TOLD
WILLARD WAS ALREADY FOUR YEARS OLD

MY AGE WAS ZEROAND IT’S PLAIN TO SEE
WILLARD WAS INFINITELY OLDER THAN ME

BUT WE FOUND OUT- WHEN TWO YEARS PAST
THAT HIS GREAT SENIORITY- WOULDN’T LAST

FOR AT THAT TIMETHE WAY IT WENT
HE LED ME JUST- 200%

IT STRUCK ME THEN – I SAID “OH WOW”
I SEE WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NOW

BECAUSE IF IT GOES ON LIKE THAT
I’LL PASS HIM UP IN NO TIME FLAT!

BUT I GREW TO 4 – AND AT THAT STAGE
WILLARD STILLWAS TWICE MY AGE

AND AS THE YEARS ROLL BY- YOU KNOW
MY GAIN UPON HIMSEEMS TO SLOW

I FEAR THAT HE WILL ALWAYS BE
JUST A LITTLE BIT OLDER THAN ME

FOR NOW UPON THE PRESENT DATE
HE’S 92 – I’M 88

IT SEEMS AS THOUGH I STRIVE IN VAIN
TO MAKE THIS VAUNTED LAST SMALL GAIN

I GUESS THAT I MUST BE CONTENT
THAT HE STILL LEADS – BY 4 PERCENT

BECAUSE THE WAY IT LOOKS TO ME
I’LL CATCH HIM AT INFINITY

WELL- THINGS ARE NOT – AS THEY WERE THEN
FOR NOW WE AREJUST TWO OLD MEN
