So far there have been several stories that start with: “This is probably not the kind of story that a 90 year old should be telling to his children or grandchildren.” Well, this one may not be either. But it’s a great memory, so here it goes.
This story takes place after I was discharged from the Navy, worked a year-and-a-half at Lockheed, and then went into the building business with my brother.
It was about ten o’clock in the morning, and it was a perfect day. I was working on a job about 5 miles from home. I was the only one on the job and I was kind of lonely and I was thinking, “This would sure be a nice day to do something else.” Between my sawing and hammering I had been thinking about Phyllis. I was thinking, “This would sure be a better day for making love than for sawing and hammering. I thought about this for a while and I thought, “No one would miss me, because no one else is here, and besides, I’m the boss.”
So, I threw my tools in my tool box and threw my tool box in the pick up and headed for home.
When I arrived and walked in the door, Phyllis looked up from her busy task and said; “What are you doing here!!?” When I told her what I was doing there she said, “But it’s bright daylight! It’s the middle of the day! Go back to work. I’ll see you tonight!” I was learning again, what I already knew, that Phyllis’ first response to an unusual situation was, “No,” and this was a somewhat unusual situation.
I thought, “How great! After seven years of marriage, I’m still courting her!
I put on my saddest face and said, “But I’ve been thinking about you all morning and I was just thinking how nice it would be, so I picked up my tools and left the job and came all the way home just to be with you.”
Phyllis was beginning to smile. I knew I had it made. We snuggled up. Suddenly, she jumped up! She went around and locked all the doors and pulled down all the blinds. Then she came back.
I had plenty of time to go back to work but I was in no mood for sawing and hammering, and it was so nice to spend the rest of the day playing hooky from work and just being at home with Phyllis.
